There are wins that feel bigger than three points. And then there is this wonderfully no-frills 1–0 in Dortmund, a match about as glamorous as a toolbox in the rain — which is exactly why it was so satisfying. Bayer 04 did not put on a fireworks display against the team in second place. Instead, they played a mature, grown-up game. Not spectacular, not always pretty, but exactly the kind of performance you need at this stage of the season if you want to win away against a top side: patience, nerve, and a Robert Andrich strike that looked like a man personally trying to drag Champions League football back to the Rhine.
The opening spell was not exactly enjoyable. Dortmund had the ball, and we had that familiar uneasy feeling that this might become one of those afternoons where Bayer were reduced to damage control. But after recent weeks full of chaos, too many goals conceded, and a little too much “anything can happen,” maybe this was precisely the correction the team needed. Hjulmand had clearly drilled into them that you do not always win big games with sparkle. Sometimes you win them by making life miserable for the opponent. Welcome to the football of reason — even if, for us fans, that is only half as sexy as three slick passes and a Grimaldo rocket into the top corner.
The fact that Andrich of all people decided it feels perfect. A player who has not exactly been showered with praise in recent weeks steps up in Dortmund and provides the moment of the day. It was not just a fine goal, it was also a timely reminder that this team still has real characters in it. And in the race for the Champions League, characters matter just as much as pretty passing combinations for the tactical romantics.
Of course, the full truth is that Bayer did not have everything under control in the second half. Guirassy hitting the bar was no harmless accident, it was a warning sign. And going forward, a few counterattacks could have been played out much more cleanly. So no, this team is not fully polished yet. But maybe that is exactly the progress: winning even when not everything clicks.
What remains is a victory that sends a message. In Dortmund, where they usually love to talk loudly about ambition, Bayer 04 quietly came in and cleared the place out. Not with samba, but with steel-toe boots. And sometimes, that is the most beautiful kind of fan romance.
