There are draws that feel acceptable. And then there is this 3-3 in Heidenheim. That one belongs in a very different category, somewhere between a root canal and spilling beer all over your favorite scarf. Bayer led twice, scored three times, played the team at the bottom of the table – and still managed to throw away two points. Anyone trying to dress that up can also claim a burning toaster creates a cozy atmosphere.
The worst part is that the first half looked exactly like what was needed after the Arsenal exit: control, calm, quality. Tillman scored, Schick scored, and Heidenheim looked like the kind of opponent you put away with professional seriousness. Not flashy, not brilliant, but mature. The kind of performance that says: yes, the Champions League dream is over, but in the league we still know what we are doing.
And then it happened again – the thing that has become far too familiar this season whenever Bayer seem to have everything under control: the team starts confusing control with complacency. Heidenheim grew bolder, more aggressive, more uncomfortable, and Bayer reacted like someone standing in the rain hoping the cloud will simply move on by itself. Of course it did not. Heidenheim came back, Schick restored the lead, and even then it never felt finished. If you score three away from home and still do not win, that is not bad luck. That is a lack of ruthlessness.
What makes it even more frustrating is the wider context. Out of Europe, now a third straight league draw, and instead of attacking the final stretch with anger and clarity, Bayer handed a lifeline to a relegation candidate. Credit to Heidenheim, of course. They fought, they ran, they believed. But that is exactly why it is so disappointing: Bayer knew what was coming and still allowed it to happen.
As a fan, what remains is plain disappointment. Not because a chaotic 3-3 is automatically a disaster, but because this team should be better than this and knows it. Three goals in Heidenheim have to be enough. Full stop. Anything else is no longer just a slip-up – it is becoming a painfully expensive habit.
