Bayer 04 surprise with Martínez: a coach without glamour, but full of promise

Bayer 04 Leverkusen will head into the new season with a new head coach: Carles Martínez Novell will take charge of the Werkself on 1 July 2026 and has signed a contract running until 30 June 2028. The 42-year-old Spaniard joins from FC Toulouse, whom he most recently coached in France’s Ligue 1, and succeeds Kasper Hjulmand in Leverkusen, who is leaving the club after just one season.

At first glance, this appointment may not be the major name some might have expected. Martínez is not a coach who arrives with a long list of trophies or a huge media echo. But that is precisely what makes this decision so interesting. Bayer 04 do not appear to be chasing maximum noise, but rather a profile that fits the club’s sporting direction: modern, development-oriented, internationally experienced, and clearly focused on working with young players.

Martínez certainly brings intriguing credentials. At Toulouse, he stabilised an internationally assembled squad, developed it further, and guided it to a solid sporting level. His structured approach, clear communication with players and staff, and detail-oriented training work have been particularly highlighted. Bayer 04 evidently do not see him as a short-term firefighter, but as a coach capable of shaping a team, improving it, and raising it to a consistently high level.

His background in youth development is especially interesting. Martínez spent several years working at La Masia, FC Barcelona’s famous talent academy. During that time, he was involved in the development of players such as Gavi, Xavi Simons, and Ansu Fati. For a club like Bayer 04, which has traditionally thrived on identifying young players early, developing them further, and taking them to the next level both sporting-wise and economically, this experience is an important building block.

Of course, the appointment also carries risk. The Bundesliga is not Ligue 1, Leverkusen is not Toulouse, and expectations at Bayer 04 have risen significantly after the club’s strong recent years. Whoever takes over the Werkself is no longer taking charge of a comfortable development club, but of a team with European ambitions. Bayer 04 want to compete permanently at the top level, remain internationally competitive, and further consolidate their position among Europe’s leading clubs. That is a demanding task for a coach who still has to prove that he can succeed on this bigger stage and under greater pressure.

At the same time, the decision fits the club’s overall approach. In recent years, Bayer 04 have often benefited from not always taking the most obvious route. Players have been signed early, before they appeared on everyone else’s radar. Coaching decisions have not been based solely on names, but on ideas, fit, and development potential. Carles Martínez Novell could fall exactly into that category: not a glamour signing on the touchline, but perhaps a coach with a clear idea of how modern football should work.

For the fans, this marks the beginning of an exciting new phase. The key question will be whether Martínez can transfer his principles to the team quickly enough. Bayer 04 need not only attractive football, but results. Not only development, but stability. Not only talent promotion, but tangible success. Especially after Kasper Hjulmand’s departure, it will be crucial for the new coach to build trust quickly and give the team a clear direction.

In the end, the appointment of Carles Martínez Novell is one of those decisions that can only be fully judged in hindsight. It may turn out to be a bold and clever move — or an experiment that proved too big for the moment. Right now, however, it mainly feels consistent. Bayer 04 are backing a coach who stands for development, structure, and modern football ideas. Whether this becomes the next successful Werkself story will become clear from 1 July onwards.
